On September 15, 2025, a shocking video from Texas State University in San Marcos went viral on social media. It showed a student, later identified as Devion Canty Jr., mocking the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Kirk was shot and killed earlier that month during an event at Utah Valley University.

In the viral clip, Canty was seen yelling at mourners. He acted out the moment Kirk was shot by holding his neck, jerking his head back, and falling to the ground. The video quickly spread, sparking nationwide anger.

Reaction From Texas Leaders

The incident caught the attention of Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who demanded that the university take action. He said the behavior was unacceptable and did not reflect the values of Texas.

University President Kelly Damphouse later confirmed that Canty had been removed from the school. The university stressed that mocking violence in such a way went against its principles.

Withdrawal From University

Canty admitted that he was given two options: immediate expulsion or voluntary withdrawal. He decided to withdraw from the university.

In a statement, Canty said he acted in the “heat of the moment.” He claimed he was being unfairly judged as an “out-of-control, disrespectful young Black man.” Canty also alleged that during the protest, he faced harassment, including being spit on and called racial slurs.

Fundraising Efforts

After leaving the university, Canty launched a GoFundMe campaign titled “going back to txst.” His goal is to raise $9,000 to continue his education. By September 20, 2025, the fundraiser had collected nearly $2,000.

Canty said he still believes in education and hopes to return to Texas State University in the future. His case has now become part of a larger debate about free speech, accountability, and consequences following the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
