The Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit will remain on the Formula One calendar until 2030. The news was officially announced ahead of Sunday’s race in Baku. The previous deal, signed in 2023, was set to end in 2026.
History of the Baku Race
The Baku City Circuit joined the Formula One schedule in 2016. The first race was called the European Grand Prix and was won by Nico Rosberg with Mercedes. Since then, the circuit has hosted some of the most dramatic races in F1.
Over the years, several big names like Daniel Ricciardo, Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas, Sergio Perez, and Max Verstappen have taken victories in Baku. Notably, Perez is the only driver to win twice at this track.
Unique Features of the Circuit
The Baku track is one of the most exciting circuits on the calendar. It is six kilometers long, with tight corners, long straights, and a famous castle section that has the narrowest turn in Formula One. The layout of the track always produces thrilling racing moments, which makes it a fan favorite.
Formula 1 and Azerbaijan Partnership
Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali said Baku has given a warm welcome to the sport since 2016. He praised the unique mix of modern city views and historic old town streets, which create a special backdrop for the race. Domenicali also thanked Azerbaijan’s leaders and organizers for their continued support and commitment.
Dr. Farid Gayibov, Minister of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan, added that the extension proves the country’s vision of becoming a global hub for major sports. He said the race has become one of the most popular on the calendar, showcasing Azerbaijan’s beauty, energy, and hospitality.
Looking Ahead
With this contract extension, fans can expect to see the Azerbaijan Grand Prix stay an important part of Formula One for many years. Teams like Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, and Mercedes are expected to bring strong competition in Sunday’s race.
