Florida A&M University announcer Joe Bullard has issued a public apology after sparking controversy for his remarks about Honey Beez, a plus-size dance team from Alabama State University.
During a joint performance with the Mighty Marching Hornets Band, Bullard referred to the Honey Beez as “the new face of Ozempic.” The comment quickly drew backlash on social media and from the HBCU community, with many calling it disrespectful and body-shaming.
Joe Bullard Issues Apology
Joe Bullard later shared a statement on Facebook, calling his words “lighthearted banter.” He admitted that his comments were hurtful and crossed a line. Although the post was deleted, screenshots of his apology went viral.
Bullard specifically apologized to the Honey Beez, Florida A&M University, Alabama State University Marching Band, and supporters of both schools.
He wrote:
“Friendly competition and playful jesting have long been a part of HBCU band culture, but I now realize my words were not appropriate. My intention was never to belittle or disrespect the incredible young people who represent our schools with talent and pride.”
Universities Respond to Controversy
Following the incident, Florida A&M University President Marva Johnson also extended an apology to the Honey Beez.
Meanwhile, Dr. Quinton T. Ross Jr., President of Alabama State University, released a strong statement:
“Honey Beez, please know that you are celebrated, valued, and admired for the joy you bring to the Hornet Nation. Continue to shine, because your light cannot be dimmed by negativity.”
So far, Florida A&M University has not taken disciplinary action against Bullard.
Who is Joe Bullard?
Joe Bullard is a well-known radio personality with more than 35 years of experience in broadcasting and music. He started his career at WANM 1070 AM and has worked with multiple radio stations, including WTAL, WHBX-FM, and WQTL VIBE 106.1.
He joined Florida A&M University last month as a part-time consultant at the School of Journalism and Graphic Communication. Alongside his announcing duties, Bullard helps students with media projects, fundraising, and radio training.
He is also recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of FAMU and was inducted into the Black Radio Hall of Fame. A few years ago, he received the keys to Tallahassee and Quincy in honor of his contributions to broadcasting.
