What is Fruitarian Diet? Polish Woman Karolina Krzyzak Dies in Bali After Drastic Weight Loss

Karolina Krzyzak’s story has gone viral online after the 27-year-old Polish national was found dead at a Bali resort in December 2024.

Krzyzak had checked into the Sumberkima Hill Resort and requested a villa with a pool. Hotel staff immediately noticed her “emaciated” condition. She followed a fruitarian diet, consuming only fruit that did not kill or harm the plant, and asked the staff to bring fruit to her room exclusively.

According to staff who spoke to The Sun UK, the resort often hosted vegan guests and were not initially alarmed by her request. However, Krzyzak appeared so weak that a night staff member had to carry her to her room. Staff repeatedly urged her to undergo a doctor’s consultation, but she refused each time.

On the third day of her stay, a local friend contacted the resort, stating that Krzyzak had failed to meet her as planned. When staff checked her villa, they discovered her unresponsive body. They observed her teeth had begun to rot and her nails were yellow.

A friend later revealed that Krzyzak had developed osteoporosis and an albumin deficiency due to prolonged malnutrition. She had also battled anorexia since her teenage years. After moving to the UK to study at Leeds University, she developed an interest in yoga and veganism. Her parents and friends had urged her to return home for medical treatment, but she refused.

Krzyzak’s death draws comparisons to that of vegan influencer Zhanna Samsonova, also known as Zhanna D’Art, who died on July 21, 2023.

Samsonova, who lived in Malaysia and created food-related content, claimed in her videos that for four years she consumed only fruits, sunflower seed sprouts, smoothies, and juices. Her mother said she died from a “cholera-like infection,” but a friend disclosed that for seven years she ate only jackfruits and durians.

Although her official cause of death was never revealed, Samsonova’s friends said they had been worried about her health. She returned to Russia for treatment but fled before receiving medical care.
