FIR to Be Filed for Driving Over 150km/h on Motorways, Says Minister

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has announced that anyone driving over 150 kilometers per hour on motorways will face legal action, including the registration of an FIR. He said drivers exceeding 120 km/h will be fined, but crossing the 150 km/h limit will lead to criminal charges.

The minister gave these instructions during a meeting to review the performance of the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP). He stressed that over speeding must be strictly controlled and directed the police to fully enforce speed and axle-load rules across the motorways.

To reduce road accidents, he called for awareness campaigns, distribution of pamphlets, and putting up warning signs at entry points. He said that saving lives must be a top priority.

Abdul Aleem Khan also expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance of the Motorway Police. He ordered the removal of all police personnel working at officers’ homes as cooks, barbers, or attendants, saying such duties are not acceptable. He reminded officers that their job is to serve the public, not for personal comfort.

The minister reviewed suggestions to outsource the vehicle fitness inspection system and to introduce electronic monitoring systems similar to those used in developed countries. He asked NHMP to submit clear plans to strengthen security and prevent crimes on the motorways.

He gave the Motorway Police a one-week deadline to show improvement and warned that strict action would be taken if progress is not seen. He also made it clear that only those who perform well and show responsibility will be eligible for future benefits.

“Holding office is not a privilege, it is a responsibility to serve the nation,” he said.
