Who Is Jemima Goldsmith’s Mother Lady Annabel Goldsmith? Career, Net Worth Explored as She Dies at 91
Lady Annabel Goldsmith, a distinguished British socialite, philanthropist, and matriarch of one of the United Kingdom’s most influential political and media dynasties, has passed away at the age of 91. She was the former mother-in-law of Pakistan’s ex-prime minister Imran Khan and a close confidante of the late Princess Diana.
Born Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart in London on June 11, 1934, she was the daughter of the 8th Marquess of Londonderry. She assumed the courtesy title of Lady Annabel in 1949 following her father’s succession, according to a report by the BBC.
Lady Annabel rose to prominence within London’s elite social scene during the 1960s and became the namesake of the renowned Mayfair nightclub Annabel’s, founded in 1963 by her first husband, entrepreneur Mark Birley. The exclusive establishment soon became a magnet for royalty, celebrities, and members of the aristocracy.
From her marriage to Birley, Lady Annabel had three children — Rupert, Robin, and India Jane. After their 21-year union concluded, she married billionaire financier Sir James Goldsmith in 1978. Their marriage produced three children: Jemima, Zac, and Ben Goldsmith.
Her daughter Jemima was married to Imran Khan, former Pakistani prime minister and founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), from 1995 to 2004. Her son Zac Goldsmith served as a Conservative MP for Richmond Park and contested the 2016 London mayoral election, while Ben Goldsmith has established himself as a financier and environmental advocate.
Throughout her life, Lady Annabel was deeply engaged in philanthropy and humanitarian work. She championed multiple causes, including environmental conservation, animal welfare, and initiatives for children affected by HIV/AIDS in South Africa. In 2004, she released her memoir Annabel: An Unconventional Life, detailing her aristocratic heritage and eventful personal journey across decades of British high society.
BBC cited a tribute from her youngest son, Ben Goldsmith, who said, “We are bereft, not for her, because her life was extraordinary and complete, but for us, because of the immense hole in our lives she leaves behind.”
Although Lady Annabel’s personal net worth was never officially disclosed, her late husband, Sir James Goldsmith, was estimated to have left a fortune of around £1.5 billion. In 2008, The Times reported that her wealth primarily originated from inheritance, valued at approximately £500 million, though no formal will was ever made public.
