Who is Cheng Li-wun’s Husband Luo Wu-chang? Meet Taiwan’s New Firebrand Opposition Leader

24 October, 2025 16:33

Cheng Li-wun, the newly elected chair of Taiwan’s main opposition party, Kuomintang (KMT), has become the center of attention both in politics and media. Her strong views on cross-strait peace and unity have made her a key political figure in Taiwan’s heated landscape.

Cheng, 55, was elected as KMT chair on Saturday, October 18, 2025, after winning more than 50 percent of the votes. She promised to unite not only her party but the entire nation.

A New Face of Taiwan’s Opposition

In her victory speech, Cheng Li-wun called for unity and peace. “The ending of elections is the beginning of unity,” she said. Cheng wants to rebuild trust among Taiwanese people and maintain calm relations with Beijing.

Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Cheng on her win. He said both parties, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the Kuomintang (KMT), share a “common political foundation.” He also highlighted the 1992 Consensus, which supports the idea that both Taiwan and China belong to “one China.”

Who is Cheng Li-wun’s Husband Luo Wu-chang?

Cheng Li-wun is married to Luo Wu-chang, a respected academic and former political advisor. Luo is known for keeping a low profile despite his wife’s rising fame. He has often been described as her “quiet strength,” supporting her during tough campaigns and public criticism.

According to local media, Luo has worked in education and government consulting. He has always stayed away from the spotlight but is seen accompanying Cheng during major political events. The couple has been married for several years and share a stable relationship built on mutual respect.

Cheng Li-wun’s Political Journey

Before joining the Kuomintang, Cheng began her career in the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) — now her main rival. Her move to KMT was considered bold at the time, but she quickly gained influence through her strong speeches and organizational skills.

Under her leadership, the KMT plans to promote dialogue with China and reduce the risk of conflict across the Taiwan Strait. She believes Taiwan can maintain peace through diplomacy rather than confrontation.

Balancing Politics and Personal Life

Despite her busy political life, Cheng has often credited her husband Luo Wu-chang for his constant support. Friends say Luo provides stability and balance in her high-pressure career. Cheng once mentioned that her husband’s advice helps her stay grounded during political challenges.

As tensions between Taiwan and China continue, Cheng has called herself a “creator of peace.” She said the KMT will act as “the strongest shelter for everyone” and work to safeguard peace in the Taiwan Strait.

The new KMT leader also plans to challenge the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the next elections in 2026 and 2028, aiming to return her party to power.
