Who Is Sutton Foster’s Ex-Husband, Ted Griffin? Everything About Their Relationship Before Divorce
Before her romance with Hugh Jackman became public, Sutton Foster had spent nearly a decade married to screenwriter Ted Griffin.
Foster’s first marriage was to her college sweetheart, actor Christian Borle, from 2006 to 2009. Following their separation, she met Griffin — known for writing Ocean’s Eleven, Prom, and The Wolf of Wall Street — through a blind date set up by mutual friends. The pair wed in 2014 after years of dating and later welcomed their daughter, Emily, in 2017.
“We plan these surprise dates for each other, and the only rule is that you can’t say no,” Foster shared with Us Weekly in 2019. “It’s not like, ‘OK, you have to eat a spider.’ We try to be very gentle about it.”
According to an insider cited by Us Weekly, Foster and Jackman’s bond began during their time working together on The Music Man. “A lot of people on Broadway knew, and we kept it quiet because both of them are such kind people. Everyone respected their privacy. But there was an affair and overlap,” the source revealed. “They are really happy now.”

After several years together, Foster and Griffin tied the knot. Her dress-shopping journey appeared on TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress. Reflecting on her gown, she told People, “I knew that it made me feel different. I felt very confident and knew that it was the first dress I had tried on that felt right.”

The Broadway star praised her husband’s intellect and creativity, telling Broadway.com, “He’s like the smartest guy I’ve ever known. He’s incredibly smart.” Foster added that they enjoyed watching films together — he introduced her to classics like Rear Window while she preferred “silly” movies. “I’m trying to bring his intelligence a little bit down,” she joked.

After facing fertility challenges, Foster and Griffin adopted their daughter Emily. “Where IVF was full of disappointment and heartbreak, adoption was so clearly what was meant to be for us,” she shared during Lincoln Center’s American Songbook performance. “Our lives are forever changed, and our hearts are exploding.”
Foster later told People, “I’m fascinated by Emily; she changes every day. It doesn’t matter where she came from, my belly or someone else’s. When she was born, I was like, ‘What took me so long?’ I realized I was waiting for her.”
She also credited Griffin for inspiring her desire for motherhood. “There was something about being with Ted that made me want kids,” she said. “He belonged in my family. [I] didn’t really understand the concept of motherhood until he came around.”

In her Us Weekly interview, Foster revealed the moment she knew Griffin was “the one.” “I knew I was going to marry my husband when he bought me a pair of sweatpants,” she said. “I still wear them and will probably keep wearing them until they turn to dust.”
During the COVID-19 lockdown, Foster noted that the family grew closer. “This is the first time we’ve all been together for this long without one of us traveling,” she told People. “Especially breakfast and dinner — we all sit at the table and talk. We’ve made it an important part of our day to come together as a family.”
She added that her daughter was “really thriving” with all of them under one roof.

In a personal essay for People, Foster reflected on her evolving thoughts about motherhood. “I was always very career-driven, and I had such a tricky relationship with my mom. It was never clear cut for me,” she wrote. Reflecting on her first marriage, she added, “I married in my 30s — it didn’t last. But one thing it did give me was this little inkling that I wanted to maybe have a family.”
She continued, “When I met my husband, it was the first time I finally went, ‘Oh, I get it. I understand why people have families.’”

Reports later confirmed that Foster and Jackman developed a connection before her marriage ended. “Deborra-lee was blindsided when she found out about the affair through the run of the show,” a source told Us Weekly about Jackman’s wife. “It was apparently Broadway’s worst-kept secret, and Deborra-lee was the last to know. … He didn’t own up to it.”
Foster had previously described her friendship with Jackman warmly, telling Vogue, “You usually go into these things thinking, ‘Well, I hope we get along.’ But we just spent Memorial Day with our families.”
She also spoke on Live With Kelly and Ryan about their on-set ritual. “We just talk and catch up on our day,” she said. “That’s been one of the best parts of the whole thing — that I’ve made this wonderful new friend.”
2025
In January 2025, Foster and Jackman went public with their relationship after being spotted on a date night in Los Angeles amid her ongoing divorce from Griffin. Nine months later, they made their red carpet debut as a couple at the Hollywood premiere of Jackman’s film Song Sung Blue.
