What Wikipedia Says About Elon Musk’s Grokipedia
Elon Musk has launched Grokipedia, an AI-driven encyclopedia powered by his xAI chatbot, Grok, positioning it as a rival to the longstanding Wikipedia. Musk announced the platform in late September, describing it as a “massive improvement” over Wikipedia. Since its launch, public reactions have been mixed, with users debating the merits of the AI-based system compared to the human-edited platform.
Wikipedia, which has been maintained by volunteers for over two decades, claims to be the “largest and most-read reference work in history.” The platform relies on donations, a system Musk has criticized in the past.
Many early users of Grokipedia noted that the platform closely mirrors Wikipedia in formatting and structure. A social media post highlighted this, stating, “Grokipedia rips off directly from Wikipedia, word for word, formatting, structure, the whole thing.” Other users praised Grokipedia for its factual and unbiased approach, with one commenting, “I will literally never use Wikipedia again. Grokipedia is clearly much more factual and unbiased, and easier to read source documents.”
Grokipedia’s treatment of controversial topics has also drawn attention. While some users pointed out alleged biases in the platform, others highlighted its neutral tone on subjects like George Floyd and Bitcoin, with one social media post noting, “The nuance and detail on Grokipedia is FAR superior to Wikipedia and is clearly not pushing any ideologies, unlike Wikipedia.”
Wikipedia itself has already created an entry on Grokipedia, describing it as “a free online encyclopedia reportedly made by the AI model Grok, launched by Elon Musk’s company xAI. It was created as a means to address the lack of a truly neutral encyclopedia on the internet as said by Musk because he believes that Wikipedia has a left-wing bias.” The article notes that Grokipedia started on October 27, 2025, contains roughly 885,000 articles, and does not allow users to make edits.
Musk has expressed ambitious plans for Grokipedia, tweeting, “Grokipedia will exceed Wikipedia by several orders of magnitude in breadth, depth and accuracy,” and highlighting the goal of preserving knowledge on the Moon and Mars. He added, “Nice work by the @xAI team on Grokipedia.com! The goal here is to create an open source, comprehensive collection of all knowledge. Then place copies of that etched in a stable oxide in orbit, the Moon and Mars to preserve it for the future. Foundation.”
As Grokipedia gains traction, the debate continues over whether an AI-driven platform can surpass the human-curated encyclopedia in accuracy, neutrality, and public trust.
