Strong Earthquake in Northern Afghanistan Kills 7, Injures 150
A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan early Monday, killing at least seven people and injuring more than 150, officials confirmed.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake’s epicenter was about 22 kilometers southwest of Khulm district in Samangan province, at a depth of 28 kilometers.
The tremors were felt across several northern cities, including Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province, causing panic among residents. Many people rushed out of their homes into open spaces as the quake struck in the early morning hours.
Authorities reported heavy damage to houses and buildings, especially in rural areas where mud structures collapsed. Rescue teams have been deployed to affected regions, and emergency operations are ongoing.
The earthquake was also felt in neighboring countries, including Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Iran.
Officials warned that the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue and more reports come in from remote districts.
