Punjab approves Dubai-inspired driving license points system – how it works

08 November, 2025 13:14

LAHORE: The Punjab government has approved a new driving license points system to reduce traffic violations across the province. The system takes inspiration from countries like Dubai, where a similar model helps keep roads safer.

How the Points System Works

Under the new system, each traffic offense will lead to a deduction of two to four points from a driver’s license. If a driver collects 20 points in a year, their license can be suspended for two months to one year, depending on how serious or frequent the violations are.

Traffic officials say this points-based method will hold drivers more accountable, especially repeat offenders. Offenses like overspeeding and running red lights will result in a four-point deduction in addition to a fine.

The main goal is to make drivers more careful and responsible on the road, focusing on long-term behavior change rather than just collecting fines.

Car Driving License Importance

A valid driving license shows that a driver has passed the required tests and understands road rules. It helps ensure that only trained drivers are on the roads, reducing accidents and improving safety.

Driving without a license can lead to legal action, fines, or even vehicle impoundment. Having a proper license supports law enforcement and promotes safer traffic flow for everyone.

Learner and Regular License Fees

To get a regular driving license, a person must first obtain a learner license, which costs Rs500 and can be applied for online.

After that, the applicant must visit a licensing center and pass both theoretical and practical tests.

  • Test fee: Rs150

  • License fee: Rs1,350

  • Courier charges: Rs480

This brings the total cost for a one-year car driving license to Rs1,830.
Applicants can also choose to make a license valid for up to five years, with fees varying based on the duration.

The new points system and updated procedures show the Punjab government’s commitment to improving road safety and promoting disciplined driving across the province.
