The Karachi administration has announced the closure of a key stretch of University Road, from Hassan Square to Nipa Chowrangi, starting November 10, 2025. This closure will last for 51 days, until December 30, due to major development work related to the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project and the K-IV water supply scheme.
According to a joint statement from the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) and the Sindh government, both lanes of University Road, between Nipa Chowrangi and the Federal Urdu University (Nipa Bridge), will be closed to traffic. The project involves the installation of a 7-kilometer underground water pipeline, which will later be linked to the K-IV bulk water supply system to improve the city’s water distribution network.
The work will be completed in two phases: the first phase will cover the section from Nipa to the Federal Urdu University, while the second phase will stretch from Hassan Square to Nipa. The project officially began on November 10.
The closure is expected to cause significant traffic congestion on alternative routes, including Shahrah-e-Liaquat, Shahrah-e-Faisal, and Gulistan-e-Jauhar, already affected by the ongoing Red Line project. Commuters have expressed concerns about dust and pollution from the construction.
The traffic police have issued a diversion plan to ease the flow of vehicles. Vehicles coming from Sabzi Mandi will be rerouted through Gharibabad, while traffic traveling from Nipa towards Hassan Square will be diverted to Rashid Minhas Road via Aladdin Park. Authorities have urged drivers to cooperate with on-site officials and follow the temporary traffic plan for smoother travel during the construction period.
