Bangladesh prepares to start direct flights to Karachi
Biman Bangladesh Airlines is planning to start three weekly flights to Karachi to boost trade and improve connections between Pakistan and Bangladesh, said Bangladesh High Commissioner to Pakistan, Iqbal Hussain Khan.
The high commissioner shared this information during a lecture at the Foreign Services Academy on Thursday. He stressed the importance of regional cooperation to overcome connectivity challenges in South Asia.
Khan said the region has great potential for trade and economic growth, but issues like limited access, border restrictions, and regional politics continue to slow progress. He highlighted that Pakistan and Bangladesh could significantly increase bilateral trade if these barriers are addressed.
He also mentioned traditional industries, such as Kashmir’s pashmina and dates, noting that direct market access could boost trade volumes.
The high commissioner referred to the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) as an important regional platform but said border issues and actions by stronger nations sometimes weaken trust among member countries.
He concluded that no country can succeed alone and that regional collaboration is the key to economic growth and development in South Asia.
