India Struggles Diplomatically Despite Big Spending in Washington

10 January, 2026 10:30

Despite investing millions of dollars into U.S. lobbying, India continues to face significant hurdles on the diplomatic front. Following a series of regional disputes and shifts in the balance of power, the Indian government has increasingly turned to professional lobbying firms to compensate for perceived diplomatic weaknesses.

Investigations by the American agency Open Secrets and the news outlet The Indian Express has exposed the scale of this spending, revealing that several lobbyists were hired in 2025 to bolster India’s international reputation. Specifically, reports indicate that the Indian government paid $450,000 to the BGR Group to enhance its standing in Washington.

Further reporting from The Indian Express highlights that India initiated contact with the Trump administration through these channels to manage the narrative surrounding “Operation Sindoor” following recent strategic setbacks.

To facilitate high-level meetings with U.S. officials, the Indian delegation also secured the services of the SHW lobbying firm at an annual cost of $1.8 million, in addition to retaining Mercury Public Affairs for $75,000 per quarter.

Ultimately, these reports suggest that India’s international diplomatic standing may require more than high-priced public relations and external lobbying to address its underlying challenges.
