Pakistan Plays Key Role in Promoting Peace Amid Iran Tensions

10 January, 2026 17:22

Pakistan’s proactive diplomacy has come into sharp focus amid rising tensions in Iran, as the nation is increasingly viewed as an essential player for de-escalating regional conflicts and maintaining peace. The American magazine The National Interest has acknowledged Pakistan’s regional importance and its effective use of diplomacy, noting that after the situation in Venezuela, some hard-liners in Washington have considered making Iran the next target.

While President Trump has warned of U.S. intervention in the event of a crackdown on protesters, the publication argues that a Venezuela-style approach to Iran would be a failed strategy that could ignite a serious multilateral crisis across South Asia. Opposition to military action is not limited to the Persian Gulf but is widespread across the entire region, including within Pakistan, a key U.S. partner that does not support such measures.

Bilateral relations between Pakistan and the United States have improved significantly following the high-profile meetings between Field Marshal Asim Munir and President Trump. From a national security perspective, Pakistan does not support violent regime change in Iran because it risks increasing chaos and empowering terrorist groups active on both sides of the shared border. Furthermore, such instability could provide a wider haven and weapons for separatist elements and create a significant refugee influx into Pakistan. Unlike Venezuela, Iran possesses a strong military and the capability to disrupt oil shipments in the Persian Gulf, adding another layer of global economic risk.

Given that Pakistan already faces tensions with India and security challenges from Afghanistan, it cannot afford war or insecurity on its western frontier. This reality points toward a diplomatic path rather than a military solution. The National Interest suggests that instead of war, the United States should leverage regional partners like Pakistan, who have a genuine interest in stability, to address issues ranging from ballistic missiles to the protection of protesters. Pakistan maintains unique diplomatic relations with both Tehran and Washington, and notably, Iran has even welcomed recent security agreements between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

Ultimately, the world is recognizing Pakistan’s effective diplomacy and global influence. Thanks to the visionary strategy of its political and military leadership, Pakistan is emerging as a net regional stabilizer, ensuring that its role in maintaining balance in the Middle East and South Asia is acknowledged on a global scale.
