Will Earth Lose Gravity on August 12? What NASA Says About Earth’s Gravity

20 January, 2026 13:47

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has firmly denied a viral conspiracy theory suggesting that Earth would lose its gravity for seven seconds on August 12 at 14:33 GMT.

The theory, which spread widely on social media, claimed that such an event could result in the deaths of 40 million people due to falls. It also alleged that NASA was aware of the phenomenon but kept it secret, citing a supposedly leaked document about “Project Anchor.”

NASA has dismissed these claims, explaining that they reflect a misunderstanding of gravity. Fact-checking website Snopes quoted a NASA spokesperson saying, “The Earth will not lose its gravity on August 12, 2026. Earth’s gravity is determined by its mass,” and added, “The only way for the Earth to lose its gravity would be to lose the mass of the Earth system, including its core, mantle, crust, atmosphere, terrestrial water, and ocean.”

Despite NASA’s clarification, conspiracy theories continue to circulate. On X (formerly Twitter), one user questioned, “If this is fake, why does it have a date, a project name and a budget.” Speculators also claimed that NASA’s alleged “Program Anchor,” supposedly preparing for the event, has a budget of around $89 billion.

Scientists and experts continue to assure the public that the concept of Earth suddenly losing gravity is physically impossible, and there is no credible evidence supporting these viral claims.
