How 5G auction will improve internet speed for 4G users
ISLAMABAD: Mobile internet users in Pakistan can expect faster 4G internet speeds in the coming weeks, IT Minister Shaza Fatima said during a podcast.
The minister shared that the long-awaited 5G spectrum auction will be held from February 26 to 28, 2026. She explained that this major development will first improve 4G services across the country before the full rollout of 5G.
According to Shaza Fatima, most people in Pakistan are still using 4G phones, which is why the initial upgrades will focus on improving 4G internet speeds. She added that people will gradually shift to 5G phones once the new technology becomes available.
“Why would people buy 5G phones if there is no 5G network?” she asked.
The upcoming auction is expected to be the largest telecom auction in Pakistan’s history, with around 600 MHz of spectrum available for bidding. The government hopes to earn at least $630 million in tax-free revenue from the auction.
After the auction, successful telecom companies will receive a 15-year technology-neutral license. The rollout of 5G will happen in stages, starting with a minimum download speed of 50 Mbps in the first phase.
Along with 5G, telecom operators will also be required to significantly improve 4G network quality. Internet speed and service standards are expected to increase by four to five times.
5G Service Areas in Pakistan
Reports say that 5G services will first be launched in major cities and key commercial areas, where 5G phones are more commonly used.
Cities like Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, and other provincial capitals are expected to receive 5G services in the initial phase.
