IMF Praises Pakistan’s Economic Reforms at Davos 2026

24 January, 2026 11:22

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva, has praised Pakistan for its ongoing economic reforms under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Ms Georgieva said Pakistan was taking “tough but necessary steps” to stabilize its economy. She added that the reforms would create a strong foundation for sustainable growth.

“The prime minister is serious about bringing positive change to Pakistan,” the IMF chief said. “When Shehbaz Sharif decides to do something, he follows through and ensures it gets done.”

Government shows commitment

Ms Georgieva noted that Pakistan is pursuing reforms in an organized and disciplined way. She highlighted visible signs of progress, especially in fiscal management.

“The government is seriously implementing reforms, and positive results are beginning to appear,” she said. “For the first time, we are seeing budget discipline.”

She also said that the government is focusing on improving the lives of ordinary citizens. According to Ms Georgieva, this approach is crucial to maintain public confidence during the reform process.

Cooperation with IMF

Pakistan has been working closely with the IMF under a stabilization program. The plan aims to ease balance of payment pressures, control inflation, and improve public finances.

Key measures include broadening the tax base, reducing losses in public enterprises, and improving fiscal management.

The government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that these reforms are difficult but necessary. They are aimed at putting the economy on a stable and sustainable path.

Global reassurance

The IMF chief’s remarks come as Pakistan seeks to reassure the international community about its economic policies. The World Economic Forum provided a platform for Pakistan to showcase its reform efforts and connect with global financial leaders.

Analysts say Ms Georgieva’s endorsement could help Pakistan strengthen its position in future financial support negotiations. However, they warn that consistent reform implementation and political stability are key to long-term success.

Long-term transformation

Ms Georgieva concluded by stressing the need for consistency and perseverance. She said meaningful economic transformation takes time and requires unwavering commitment from leadership.

“Pakistan has shown a serious approach to reforms. With dedication, these efforts can lead to lasting economic stability,” she said.
