The Sultanate of Oman has officially announced revised working hours for the holy month of Ramadan 1447 Hijri. The decision applies to government offices, private companies, and remote work arrangements. The move aims to support employees during fasting hours while maintaining productivity.
Reduced Working Hours for Government Employees
During Ramadan, official working hours for government employees will be limited to five hours per day. Offices under the State Administrative Apparatus will operate from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. These timings will remain effective throughout the holy month.
Flexible Working Hours Option Introduced
Oman has also allowed flexible working hours for government departments. The head of each unit will decide how flexible schedules are applied. Attendance and departure times will be set based on the nature of work.
Under this system, employees may start work anytime between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Working hours will be calculated from arrival to departure, following approved internal procedures.
Remote Work Policy During Ramadan
Remote work will be permitted for roles that can be performed without disrupting workflow. However, authorities have made it mandatory that at least 50 percent of employees must be physically present at the workplace at all times.
The final decision on remote work eligibility will rest with the unit head.
Reduced Hours for Private Sector Workers
In the private sector, working hours for Muslim employees will be reduced to six hours per day. Weekly working hours must not exceed 30 hours during Ramadan.
This measure is in line with labor laws and aims to ensure a balanced work-life routine during fasting.
Supportive Step for Ramadan Observance
The announcement reflects Oman’s continued commitment to employee welfare during Ramadan. Reduced hours, flexible schedules, and remote work options are expected to ease the physical demands of fasting while ensuring smooth operations across sectors.
