Pakistan Announces Subsidies for Electric Bikes and Rickshaws in 2026

24 February, 2026 10:07

Government of Pakistan unveiled its subsidy plan for electric motorcycles and rickshaws under the Prime Minister Electric Motorcycle Scheme. The scheme aims to promote green transport and make electric vehicles more affordable across the country.

Hammad Mansoor, CEO of the Engineering Development Board, said that Rs 100 billion have been allocated for the next five years to support electric mobility. For the current financial year, Rs 9 billion have been set aside specifically for the scheme.

Under the program, each electric motorcycle will receive a subsidy of Rs 80,000. Approximately 116,000 motorcycles are expected to be provided this year. Meanwhile, each electric rickshaw will get a subsidy of Rs 400,000 to encourage small business owners and drivers.

The Prime Minister EV bikes are priced 50,000 to 60,000 rupees lower than similar models available in the market. Officials aim to distribute 76,000 motorcycles by June 2026. Only individuals over 18 years old with a valid driving license can benefit from the program.

Mansoor emphasized that the scheme is fully transparent. Every step of the process is linked to an automated system to avoid misuse. The government believes this initiative will help reduce air pollution and cut monthly fuel costs by around Rs 8,000 per vehicle.

The subsidy program is part of Pakistan’s larger plan to encourage sustainable transport and renewable energy solutions. Officials hope it will increase the use of eco-friendly vehicles and reduce the nation’s dependence on petrol and diesel.
