Karachi Dairy Farmers Demand Milk Price Hike to Rs300 Per Litre After Eid
A new dispute over milk prices has emerged in Karachi, with dairy farmers announcing plans to raise the retail price of milk to Rs300 per litre after Eid ul Fitr. The move has sparked strong opposition from Sindh authorities.
Currently, the retail price of milk in Karachi is around Rs220 per litre, but dairy farm representatives argue that this price is far below their production costs. They state that the cost of producing milk has risen to Rs295 per kilogram, leaving the industry in a precarious financial situation. According to the farmers, the sector is “on the verge of collapse” due to mounting expenses and lack of price adjustments. They pointed out that despite persistent cost pressures, the milk price had not been raised even in 2025.
To address the issue, dairy farmers have formally requested an official price hike from the Karachi Commissioner’s Office. However, they have warned that if the government does not approve the increase, suppliers may independently raise the price to Rs300 per litre following Eid.
In response, Sindh authorities have strongly opposed any unilateral price increase. Saadia Javed, spokesperson for the Government of Sindh, said, “Strict action would be taken against anyone selling milk at Rs300 per litre without official approval.” She emphasized that the authority to set milk prices lies with the Karachi Commissioner, and no group or association has the right to raise rates on their own.
Additionally, Salman Abdullah Murad, Deputy Mayor of Karachi, also issued a stern warning, stating that the government would take strict measures against any unauthorized price hikes, insisting that it would not tolerate an undue burden on consumers.
The potential price increase has raised concerns among Karachi residents, as it could put additional pressure on household budgets in the city, the largest in the country.
