Iran FM Says Non-Hostile Vessels Can Pass Through Strait of Hormuz

24 March, 2026 11:27

Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi has said that the Strait of Hormuz remains open for vessels belonging to countries that are not supporting US-Israeli actions against Iran. He clarified that only ships linked to “aggressor parties and their supporters” face restrictions.

Araghchi made the remarks during a telephone conversation with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, where both sides discussed bilateral relations and the current regional situation following recent military tensions.

The Iranian foreign minister stated that the ongoing insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz is a direct result of what he described as illegal US and Israeli actions against Iran that began on February 28. He reaffirmed that Iran will firmly defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He also pointed out that the military strikes occurred during ongoing nuclear negotiations, calling it a sign of inconsistency on the part of the opposing side.

South Korea’s foreign minister expressed concern over rising tensions and their impact on the global economy, especially regarding the Strait of Hormuz, which handles nearly 20% of the world’s oil supply. He stressed the need for efforts to reduce tensions in the region.

Iran has maintained that the strategic waterway is open for safe navigation under its regulations, ensuring security for non-hostile countries. However, officials have warned that any further escalation could lead to a complete closure of the strait, which would significantly affect global energy markets.

In separate diplomatic contacts, Araghchi also spoke with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi. These discussions focused on regional developments and efforts to reduce tensions following the ongoing conflict.

Both sides agreed to continue consultations aimed at maintaining stability and preventing further escalation in the region.
