Pakistan Gains Global Attention as Religious Tourism Grows

11 April, 2026 17:21

Pakistan is increasingly gaining global recognition for its robust diplomatic efforts and its role as a premier destination for religious tourism. In a significant development, a 15-member delegation of Buddhist monks from Thailand and Laos arrived in Islamabad on April 1, 2026, to explore the country’s rich historical landscape. These monks, who have historically frequented sites in India, described their first-ever pilgrimage to Pakistan’s ancient Buddhist heritage as the “holiest moments of their lives.”

The delegation, having applied for their visit through the Pakistani Embassy in Thailand, undertook an extensive tour of archaeological sites across Swat, Taxila, Peshawar, and Lahore, where they performed various religious rituals. Their itinerary included visits to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Dharmarajika Stupa (the Great Stupa), constructed by Ashoka the Great in the 3rd century BC, and the Julian Monastery in Taxila, which dates back to approximately 450 BC. Furthermore, the monks explored the Takht-i-Bahi site near Mardan and examined the Gandhara civilization relics housed within the museums of Peshawar and Lahore.

Throughout their journey, the visitors expressed sincere appreciation for the efforts of the Pakistani government in preserving these sacred artifacts and monuments. By the time the delegation departed from Lahore for Thailand on April 10, 2026, they carried with them deep, positive impressions of the country. Notably, the monks explicitly rejected narratives suggesting that Pakistan is an unsafe destination, emphasizing instead their plans to document their experiences in a forthcoming travelogue. They highlighted the exceptional hospitality of the local population living near these historic sites, with one monk describing Pakistan as a “paradise of religious tolerance.”

Local observers have hailed the visit as a landmark event, noting that the revival of religious tourism serves as a vital and positive development for the regional atmosphere. Following their unique and enriching experience, the delegation members announced their commitment to strongly encouraging other monks and tourists from Thailand to explore the profound historical and spiritual offerings of Pakistan.
