Russia offers to accept Iran’s enriched uranium
Russia has said it is ready to take and store Iran’s enriched uranium as part of a possible future peace deal with the United States.
The statement comes after failed talks between Iran and the United States over the weekend. These talks had raised hopes for a quick agreement to end the ongoing conflict, which has caused thousands of deaths and disrupted the global economy since it began in late February.
Russia, which has the world’s largest nuclear weapons stockpile, has already offered several times to act as a neutral place to store Iran’s enriched uranium during any peace arrangement.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, “This proposal was voiced by President Putin in contacts with both the United States and regional states. The offer still stands, but has not been acted upon,” while speaking to reporters on Monday.
The Kremlin also criticised the warning by former US President Donald Trump about a possible blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. This key shipping route has already been under pressure due to ongoing tensions in the region.
Officials in Moscow said such actions could further harm the global economy and increase instability in international markets.
