Iran Intercepts Oil Tankers and Reimposes Strait of Hormuz Closure Amid Escalating US Tensions

Iranian armed forces have reportedly turned back two oil tankers attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, intensifying tensions in the region. The vessels, sailing under the flags of Botswana and Angola, were intercepted and forced to alter their routes, according to reports.

The incident follows Iran’s decision to once again close the Strait of Hormuz after accusing the United States of violating ceasefire conditions. The move was announced by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, which cited the continued naval blockade on Iranian ports as the primary reason.

In an official statement, the IRGC said, “However, due to the violation of the ceasefire conditions, and as the American adversary has not lifted the naval blockade on Iranian vessels and ports, the Strait of Hormuz has been closed as of this evening until this blockade is removed.”

Earlier, Iran had briefly reopened the vital shipping route, allowing commercial vessels to pass through designated corridors following a ceasefire agreement. However, the situation shifted again after Tehran claimed that the United States had failed to meet its commitments.

The renewed closure comes amid ongoing tensions that began after military escalation in late February, followed by a temporary ceasefire announced by Donald Trump. While diplomatic talks have continued, including discussions held in Islamabad, key issues such as maritime access and sanctions remain unresolved.

Iranian officials have maintained that the Strait of Hormuz will only be fully reopened once all conditions related to ending the conflict are met. The development has raised concerns over global oil supply routes, as the waterway is one of the world’s most critical channels for energy transportation.
