Putin tells Iran FM Russia will do everything to secure Middle East peace

27 April, 2026 20:12

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has arrived in Russia for talks with President Vladimir Putin as efforts continue to find a way to end the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran.

On his arrival on Monday, Araghchi said he visited Russia “with the aim of continuing close consultations between Tehran and Moscow on regional and international issues”.

He added that his meeting with Putin “will be a good opportunity to discuss developments in the war and review the latest situation”. He also said, “I am confident that these consultations and coordination between the two countries in this regard will be of particular importance,”.

The visit comes after earlier talks in Muscat with Omani officials, as Iran continues to seek regional and international support for renewed negotiations.

Ongoing tensions and ceasefire issues

The United States and Iran had agreed to a temporary ceasefire on April 8 after more than a month of fighting that began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran.

However, the truce has faced pressure due to disputes over shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and restrictions on Iranian ports. A parallel conflict involving Israel and Lebanon has also increased tensions in the region.

Russia’s role in diplomacy

Reports from Tehran suggest that Russia is expected to play an important role in future peace efforts.

Al Jazeera’s Tohid Asadi said, “We have a scenario for diplomatic settlement and another for confrontation. Russia is going to play a key role when it comes to both, so Iran’s FM is there for consultations.”

He added that Iran has several concerns, including the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and the possible extension of the ceasefire.

During the meeting, President Vladimir Putin assured Iran of Russia’s support. He said Russia would do everything possible to help achieve peace and described Iran as a strong and independent country. He also confirmed that Russia and Iran share strong strategic relations.

Regional diplomacy efforts

At the same time, the United States is adjusting its mediation efforts while tensions continue in the region.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said that Tehran will not enter negotiations while the blockade remains in place.

Meanwhile, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it is continuing operations in the region, including redirecting ships away from Iranian waters.

Pakistan’s mediation role

Reports suggest that Pakistan has played a mediating role in earlier talks and continues to support diplomatic efforts between the sides.

Officials believe recent developments could help move all parties toward a broader framework for negotiations, which may also include Gulf countries in the future.
