Eight die in Karachi amid extreme heatstroke

04 May, 2026 19:50

At least eight people lost their lives in Karachi on Monday, rescue officials said, with some deaths linked to the ongoing heatwave.

According to officials, four bodies were found on the streets in different areas, while four others died after being taken to hospitals. The affected locations include Manghopir, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Boat Basin, and the Suparco Road area.

More people were shifted to hospitals from Liaquatabad, Jamali Bridge, Surjani Town, and Defence Phase 8, but they could not survive due to their critical condition.

Rescue officials said that some of the victims were drug addicts, while others appear to have died because of the intense heat.

The deaths come as the city faces extremely hot and dry weather. The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported that Karachi recorded its hottest day of the year, with temperatures reaching 44.1°C.

The weather department said that hot and humid conditions are expected to continue, with temperatures likely to stay around 39°C. Although sea breeze may continue, high humidity will make the heat feel even more intense.

Medical experts have advised people to stay indoors during peak hours, especially between 11am and 3pm. They also recommend drinking plenty of water, avoiding direct sunlight, and wearing light and loose clothing.

People are also advised to avoid street food, drink clean or boiled water, and maintain hygiene to prevent health issues during the extreme heat.
