Europe Heatwave Breaks Records in Germany, Belgium and Netherlands as Death Toll Rises

Temperatures have broken June records across parts of Europe, including Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, as an intense heatwave continues to sweep across the continent. Authorities in several countries have also cancelled public events, including concerts, due to rising health risks linked to extreme heat.
In Germany, a provisional record temperature of 41.3°C was recorded in the south-western city of Saarbrucken near the French border. France has also endured several days of extreme heat, with officials reporting that the country experienced its hottest temperatures for three consecutive days this week.
Health officials have expressed concern over the impact of the conditions. French Health Minister Stephanie Rist highlighted the emergence of deaths occurring at home, while the World Meteorological Organization warned of severe consequences for health, ecosystems, agriculture, and labor. WMO spokesperson Clare Nullis said societies will increasingly have to adapt to such extreme conditions.
The heatwave has also affected Belgium and the Netherlands, where unofficial reports indicated temperatures reaching up to 40°C in areas near the Dutch border. As the system moves slowly north and east, authorities across Europe continue to monitor conditions amid growing concern over public safety.
