UN Chief Condemns Israeli Settlement Expansion in Occupied West Bank

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned Israel’s continued expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank, warning that the policies are contributing to the territory’s largest displacement crisis since 1967. In a quarterly report, Guterres said the growth of settler outposts has intensified violence, limited Palestinians’ access to their land, and further entrenched the occupation.
Guterres said the developments are increasing tensions, undermining the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, and threatening the viability of an independent, contiguous, and sovereign Palestinian state. His report reiterated longstanding UN concerns over settlement activity in the occupied territory, which the organization considers illegal under international law.
The report comes amid continued international scrutiny of Israeli settlement policies and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel has disputed aspects of the UN’s legal interpretation of settlements, while the issue remains a central point of contention in diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a negotiated two-state solution.
