PM Reviews Economic Impact of Regional Tensions, Calls for Preparedness and Austerity

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a meeting in Islamabad to review the potential impact of regional tensions on Pakistan’s economy, during which officials presented a report on government measures aimed at promoting austerity and fiscal discipline. The prime minister said the region was facing an uncertain situation and directed authorities to remain fully prepared to respond to any possible economic challenges.
Sharif said Pakistan’s economy remains stable by the grace of God and instructed relevant ministries to formulate a comprehensive contingency plan for timely action if needed. He praised the public for supporting previous fuel conservation and energy-saving campaigns, saying the government’s strategy had ensured a stable supply of petroleum products while protecting ordinary citizens, motorcyclists, rickshaw drivers, and transport operators through targeted subsidies that helped cushion the impact of higher fuel prices.
The prime minister also directed federal and provincial authorities to work together against those creating artificial shortages in the market, warning that prolonged regional tensions could negatively affect the country’s economic outlook. Officials briefed the meeting that Pakistan currently has sufficient petroleum reserves to meet domestic demand, while Sharif urged the nation to embrace austerity measures on a broader scale, similar to the public’s support during previous conservation campaigns.
