NYC Mayor Says Question of Netanyahu Arrest Remains Under Legal Review

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said it remains unclear whether he would have the legal authority to order the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits New York in September to attend the United Nations General Assembly. The mayor said the issue is still under review and no decision has been made.

In an interview with The New York Times, Mamdani said he is engaged in “an active conversation” with the New York City Law Department to determine whether the city’s legal framework would permit such an action. His comments come amid ongoing international debate over legal proceedings involving the Israeli prime minister.

Netanyahu is expected to travel to New York for the annual UN General Assembly session later this year, where world leaders are scheduled to address global political and security issues. Mamdani did not indicate when a legal determination would be reached, saying the matter remains under examination by city legal officials.
