Google Introduces Selfie Video Verification for Account Recovery

Google has introduced a new selfie video verification feature designed to help users regain access to their accounts when they cannot use their email address or a trusted device. To set up the feature, users look into their device’s camera and follow on-screen instructions to perform a series of head movements, allowing Google to capture multiple angles. The encrypted video is securely stored in the user’s account and can be used later during the account recovery process.

According to Google, users are encouraged to enable multiple sign-in methods to reduce the risk of losing access to their accounts. When using the selfie video option, Google compares a newly recorded video with the one previously stored on the account to verify the user’s identity. The company says the system incorporates multiple layers of security to help prevent impersonation attempts, including those involving AI-generated images or videos.

Google says selfie videos are encrypted, securely stored, and used solely to assist with account sign-in unless users choose to share them for additional purposes. The company also notes that users can delete their stored selfie videos at any time, giving them greater control over their personal data.
