Modi Govt Tightens Social Media Controls Amid Growing Criticism

28 July, 2026 16:18

The Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is facing growing criticism and is reportedly tightening restrictions on social media freedom.

According to Indian magazine The Wire, Delhi Police has asked social media platforms to remove content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The report said that frustrated Indian youths often criticize Modi through online posts and memes. Police sources reportedly confirmed that authorities are already identifying such content on various social media platforms.

However, it remains unclear under which legal authority the police are seeking the removal of the content, according to The Wire.

Human Rights Watch has said that the Indian government has increased its control over online content through amendments to IT laws since 2021.

Critics say efforts to remove critical social media posts raise concerns about freedom of expression and highlight growing restrictions on online speech in India.
