Fidan Calls Makkah Defence Agreement a Step Toward Regional Stability

Fidan stated that the Türkiye-Pakistan-Saudi Arabia defence pact is based on shared security commitments like NATO’s Article 5, while making clear that it is not aimed at confronting Iran or another country.

The Turkish foreign minister said the agreement is based on mutual defence principles, with member states committed to supporting each other during any attack. He explained that the agreement does not name any country as an enemy, with its provisions becoming active only in case of an attack on a member state.

Fidan specifically mentioned Iran, saying Tehran would not be considered a threat under the agreement unless an attack was carried out against one of the participating countries.

The Turkish foreign minister said the pact would include the establishment of a committee of foreign ministers and a general secretariat to manage cooperation between the three countries. He added that these arrangements would have similarities with some structures of NATO. The offered secretariat is likely to be customary in Saudi Arabia.

The arrangement was signed by Türkiye, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia among increasing tensions in the Middle East and rising security distresses connected to regional encounters. Under the defence pact, aggression against any one of the three nations will be considered a threat against the entire alliance.

According to Fidan, the defence pact will help build up regional assistance and security bonds, with the opportunity of increasing the cooperation to take in Egypt in the future.

“I believe that at the next stage Egypt will also be among us in the alliance,” Fidan said, adding that Egypt is a natural partner due to its regional importance. He said only a few technical matters need to be resolved before Egypt could potentially join.

The Turkish foreign minister said the agreement does not include a common enemy or target country. Instead, he described it as a framework designed to improve security cooperation and allow regional countries to work together in facing challenges.

According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the pact purposes to build up joint security, increase defence cooperation and backing constancy across the region.

Fidan called the agreement an important step towards long-term stability and said the partnership should not remain limited to only three countries. He expressed hope that more nations could eventually join the initiative to create a broader regional security framework.

The development comes as Middle Eastern countries face increasing security challenges, including conflicts, attacks on shipping routes and rising concerns over regional stability. The new defence partnership reflects efforts by regional powers to strengthen cooperation and address shared security concerns through collective action.
