Israeli Forces Raid Syrian Village, Abduct Young Man in Latest Sovereignty Violation

Israeli military forces have raided a village in Syria’s southern Dara’a province and abducted a young Syrian man, in another violation of the country’s sovereignty. According to al-Ikhbariyah Syria, three Israeli armored vehicles, backed by reconnaissance flights, entered the village of Ma’ariya. Lebanon’s al-Mayadeen reported that Israeli forces abducted the young man before withdrawing toward the Jazira military post.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said Israeli occupation forces carried out 20 incursions across Dara’a and Quneitra provinces during the first week of August. Since the collapse of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024, Israel has intensified aerial attacks and ground incursions in southern Syria, while establishing checkpoints and abducting Syrian citizens. Israel has also expanded its control over the occupied Golan Heights and seized a demilitarized buffer zone in violation of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, drawing condemnation from the UN and several Arab countries.

Meanwhile, Syria’s Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) defense ministry announced that one soldier was killed and two others wounded in an attack by unidentified assailants in eastern Deir al-Zawr province. The ministry described the incident as a “treacherous attack,” saying the soldiers came under fire in the town of Jadid Bakara. The latest developments come as intermittent talks between Damascus and Tel Aviv over a proposed “safety pact” have failed to produce a reported agreement or significant progress.
