Iran Launches Major Missile and Drone Attack on Kurdish Positions in Iraq

12 August, 2026 13:22

ERBIL: Iran has launched missiles and drones at Kurdish positions near Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.

According to international media reports, Iranian forces carried out the strikes against Kurdish bases in and around Erbil, increasing security tensions in the area.

Reports said four drones crashed in Erbil province after the attacks. However, it was not immediately clear which side the drones belonged to or how they were brought down.

The targets were reported to be Kurdish positions in northern Iraq. No immediate information was released about casualties or damage caused by the strikes.

The area around Erbil has previously been a source of tension between Iran and Kurdish armed groups. Iran has often said that some Iranian Kurdish groups based in Iraq’s Kurdistan region pose a threat to its national security.

The latest incident comes amid rising military tensions across the Middle East due to the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States. Iraq has also been affected by these tensions because of the presence of various armed groups and foreign forces.

Analysts say the Iranian strikes could increase security concerns in Iraq’s Kurdistan region and may also affect relations between Iran, the United States and other regional powers.

Authorities have not yet released official details about any deaths, injuries or damage resulting from the attacks.
