Bessent Says US Economic Pressure on Iran Is ‘Delivering Results’

WASHINGTON: US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said the Trump administration’s economic pressure campaign against Iran is beginning to affect Tehran’s financial and commercial ties with other countries.

Bessent said Treasury officials had been sent to different countries following the launch of Operation Economic Outcast to encourage governments and financial institutions to restrict business with Iran.

“These efforts are delivering results,” Bessent said in a post on X. He pointed to measures taken by Türkiye, Oman and the United Arab Emirates, saying Türkiye and Oman had announced the suspension of Mahan Air flights, while the UAE had halted flights by Iranian airlines.

He also claimed that major commercial banks in the UAE and Türkiye had stopped conducting transactions with Iran, adding that the measures were putting further pressure on Tehran’s economy.

Bessent also cited the falling value of Iran’s currency as another indication of the economic impact of the ongoing conflict.

The Treasury secretary said the US would continue working with international partners to increase pressure on Iran, arguing that further action was needed to prevent Tehran from pursuing what he described as its “terrorist agenda.”

The remarks come as the Trump administration continues its broader economic and diplomatic pressure campaign against Iran amid heightened regional tensions.
