Student-Led Anti-Government Protests Turn Violent in Albania

The latest clashes followed violent demonstrations on Wednesday, when protesters attacked government buildings, banks and businesses. According to Albania’s Health Ministry, 89 people were injured during the unrest, including 61 police officers. Student groups initially mobilised to demand education reforms but have since joined the wider “Flamingo” movement, which is calling for Rama’s resignation over allegations of widespread corruption.
The demonstrations have also intensified opposition to a luxury tourism development planned along Albania’s southern coast and associated with an investment firm founded by Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump. Critics have raised concerns over the project amid broader political and governance grievances, making it a focal point of the growing protests against the Albanian government.
