Pakistan Celebrates 79th Independence Day with National Spirit, Unity and Patriotism

Fireworks burst over Islamabad at midnight as crowds chanting “Long Live Pakistan” filled streets across the country, opening a day of nationwide celebration for Pakistan’s 79th anniversary of independence from British colonial rule.

The Associated Press described women and children joining the late-night celebrations in the capital, with roads and public spaces filling with people dressed in the national colors of green and white as fireworks lit the sky over major thoroughfares. In Lahore, the display centered on the Minar-e-Pakistan monument, a traditional focal point for the city’s festivities, while celebrations also drew crowds to Mazar-e-Quaid in Karachi and D-Chowk in Islamabad.

The day opened, as it does each year, with Fajr prayers offered for the country’s security and prosperity, followed by 21-gun salutes in Lahore and Quetta marking the formal start of festivities. By evening, the pattern extended nationwide: Hyderabad and Multan held midnight fireworks displays at Ghanta Ghar Chowk, while Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti addressed a celebration in Gwadar, extending the day’s observance to Pakistan’s southwestern coast alongside more familiar Punjab and Sindh gatherings.

City authorities put visible resources behind the atmosphere this year. Lahore’s Development Authority and Parks and Horticulture Agency coordinated illuminations, flag displays and sapling distribution across major intersections and government buildings, while Karachi’s Sharea Faisal and M.A. Jinnah Road corridors were lit in green and white with special lighting at Jinnah’s mausoleum. That kind of civic-level coordination — beyond the federal flag-hoisting ceremony President Asif Ali Zardari led — reflects how much of the day’s actual visibility depends on provincial and municipal execution rather than national programming alone.

The scale of this year’s celebrations is notable given the security backdrop. Pakistan enters this Independence Day while its military leadership manages an active mediating role in the US-Iran conflict and its interior minister works to hold together a fraying regional ceasefire — circumstances that make the sheer normalcy of open-air, midnight street gatherings something of a statement in itself, even though none of the day’s coverage framed it that way.
