September 1 Set to Begin a New Era for Apple
Apple has announced that its hardware engineering chief John Ternus will become the company’s next CEO effective September 1.
Current CEO Tim Cook will step down from the top position and become executive chairman of Apple’s board of directors.
In his new role, Cook will continue to support Apple in “certain aspects” of the company, including “engaging with policymakers around the world.”
Cook became Apple’s CEO in August 2011 after co-founder Steve Jobs stepped down because of his health.
During Cook’s leadership, Apple became the world’s most valuable company on several occasions and expanded its product and services lineup significantly.
Under Cook, Apple introduced major products and services including the Apple Watch, AirPods, HomePod, Vision Pro, Apple Music and Apple TV.
Apple has also reported record quarterly revenues in recent quarters, putting the company in a strong financial position as Cook prepares to hand over leadership to Ternus.
“It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have been trusted to lead such an extraordinary company,” Cook said.
He added that he loves Apple and is grateful for the opportunity to work with a team of innovative and creative employees dedicated to developing products and services for customers.
Ternus Takes Over Leadership
The leadership change marks the end of a long era under Cook, but it also brings new expectations for Apple.
Ternus is widely known for his focus on products and engineering, while Cook has been strongly associated with operations and supply chain management.
Apple reportedly believes Ternus has “a more decisive leadership style” compared with Cook’s “consensus” approach.
Ternus said he was optimistic about Apple’s future and praised the company’s employees for their talent and commitment.
“I am filled with optimism about what we can achieve in the years to come, and I am so happy to know that the most talented people on earth are here at Apple, determined to be part of something bigger than any one of us,” Ternus said.
Ternus will officially take over as Apple CEO on September 1, while Cook will continue to play an important role as executive chairman.
