Pakistan Weather: Rain, Urban Flooding and Landslide Risks Forecast

KARACHI: Partly cloudy conditions and likely light rain are expected in Karachi today, while hot and humid weather is forecast for Lahore.

Karachi’s temperature dropped to 26.6°C at its lowest is likely to climb to 32°C during the day. The city recorded 77% humidity, while winds from the southwest were blowing at approximately 19 kilometres per hour.

The weather in Lahore is expected hot and humid, with rain unlikely in the coming 24 hours. The maximum temperature in Lahore could rise to 37°C, and a low of around 28°C, while light winds at 6 kilometres per hour and 73% humidity are expected.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast a new spell of monsoon rain in several parts of the country. Islamabad, Rawalpindi and various areas of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are expected to receive showers.

The Met Department said a new westerly weather system is likely to affect the upper parts of the country from August 31 to September 5. Rain is expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, Lahore, Sialkot and other areas of upper Punjab.

Parts of central and southern Punjab may also receive rain from September 1 to 5. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, districts including Peshawar, Swat, Dir and Chitral are expected to experience rainfall during the forecast period.

Most parts of Sindh and Balochistan, however, are likely to remain hot and humid.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, rain is expected in Diamer, Astore, Skardu and Hunza from August 30 to September 6. Several areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, including Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Bagh, Kotli, Bhimber and Mirpur, may also receive intermittent heavy rain through September 6.

The Met Department has warned that continuous rainfall could cause urban flooding in major cities, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala and Mardan. There is also a risk of landslides in vulnerable areas.

Authorities have advised travelers and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather and stay updated with the latest forecasts and warnings.
