Met Gala 2027 Date Under Review Amid John Galliano Controversy
The Met Gala 2027 scheduled date changes as the backlash increase over the decision to honor fashion designer John Galliano in next year’s Costume Institute exhibition.
The 2027 Met Gala theme, announced on July 31, along with the “John Galliano: Horizons” exhibition. The exhibition will focus on the British designer’s influential career and work in the fashion industry.
The choice has drawn backlash over Galliano’s past antisemitic comments. In 2011, Dior fired him after a video circulate show the comments became public. He was later found guilty by a Paris court of publicly making offensive remarks based on origin, religion, race or ethnicity.
Even with the ongoing backlash, Anna Wintour and the Metropolitan Museum of Art have fortified the exhibition, saying it will focus on Galliano’s effect on fashion. The museum has also held debates with Jewish leaders about distresses surrounding the event.
As per The New York Times reported, Met trustees and board members are now seeing whether the gala date should be changed as the criticism continues.
Now Met Gala 2027 most recent intended date is May 3, in observance with its tradition of taking place on the first Monday of May. The date, though, planned at Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Reminiscence Day.
