Iran-China Talks in Beijing Successful, Araghchi Says

17 September, 2026 07:50

BEIJING: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has described his consultations in Beijing as “successful” following meetings with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, saying the two sides discussed regional developments, bilateral relations and the future security order in West Asia.

In a post on X after his meetings on Wednesday, Araghchi said Iran attaches great importance to its longstanding strategic partnership with China.

He said decisions being taken now could shape the future strategic balance in the region and have wider consequences for regional security.

The Iranian foreign minister highlighted what he described as four principles for peace outlined by Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying they were key to achieving regional peace and stability.

The principles include peaceful coexistence, respect for national sovereignty, adherence to international law, and balancing development with security.

China has also expressed readiness to support dialogue and play a constructive role in efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions.

During his meeting with Wang Yi, Araghchi said the regional situation had undergone significant changes following the US-Israeli military conflict with Iran.

He argued that any emerging regional order should be based on cooperation among regional states and should not involve foreign military presence or interference.

“In the new regional order, which will be accompanied by dialogue and cooperation among regional states, there is no place for the presence or interference of foreign forces,” Araghchi said.

Araghchi attributed the continuing tensions in West Asia to what Tehran describes as US-Israeli aggression and said Iran’s resistance had prevented the opposing side from achieving its objectives.

He also referred to what Iran describes as repeated US violations of a Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding reached between Tehran and Washington in June, saying that restoring regional calm remained a central Iranian objective.

Wang Yi described the conflict as “illegal” and stressed the importance of peace and stability in West Asia.

The Chinese foreign minister said outstanding issues should be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy and reaffirmed Beijing’s willingness to assist efforts aimed at reducing tensions.

The Beijing consultations reflect continued diplomatic engagement between Iran and China as regional tensions remain elevated.

Araghchi’s remarks indicate that Tehran intends to strengthen coordination with China while advocating a regional security framework based on cooperation, sovereignty and the exclusion of foreign military interference.
