Global Crackdown on Online Misleading Content Intensifies

LONDON: Governments in several countries are strengthening measures against unlawful or misleading online content, with authorities increasingly focusing on social media posts, cyber offences and material considered harmful to public order.

In the United Kingdom, figures cited by the Free Speech Union, based on data obtained through Freedom of Information requests by Big Brother Watch, show that 62,199 people were arrested for what the organisations describe as “speech offences” over a five-year period.

The same data recorded 18,510 charges and 12,292 convictions. The figures cover communications-related offences and do not mean that all arrests were made simply because individuals expressed political opinions.

The Free Speech Union has used the figures to argue that Britain needs a broader review of laws and policing practices affecting freedom of expression.

The issue has also attracted attention in other countries, where authorities have introduced or enforced laws dealing with online safety, misinformation, cybercrime and content considered threatening or abusive.

In India, Bihar authorities recorded 475 FIRs and 103 arrests during the first six months of 2026 as part of a crackdown on social-media misuse. Officials said the action covered fake news, defamatory material, deepfakes, communal content and other objectionable posts.

The figures illustrate the different approaches governments are taking towards online content and digital offences.

At the same time, the enforcement of online-content laws has generated debate over the balance between preventing genuine cybercrime and protecting freedom of expression.

The increasing use of social media in political and public debate has made the issue more significant, with governments facing pressure to address harmful digital content while also protecting lawful speech.
