Nine Khwarij Killed in Intelligence-Based Operation in Kohat and Hangu, 28 More in Airstrikes

RAWALPINDI: Security forces have conducted intelligence-based ground operations in Kohat and Hangu districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, followed by targeted airstrikes against terrorist hideouts in the border region with Afghanistan, according to the military.

The operations were carried out on September 20, 2026, following a series of terrorist incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa targeting civilians and security personnel.

According to the military, nine Khwarij belonging to Fitna al-Khwarij, which Pakistan describes as an Indian-sponsored proxy, were killed during a precise engagement in Kohat and Hangu, while several others were injured.

Based on intelligence gathered by security forces, selective airstrikes were also conducted against terrorist camps and hideouts associated with Fitna al-Khwarij and affiliated groups in the border region with Afghanistan.

The military said three terrorist targets were destroyed in the strikes.

One of the targets was identified as a suicide bombers’ training centre, where 28 terrorists, including several suicide bombers, were killed, according to the statement.

Large quantities of weapons and ammunition stored at the targeted camps and hideouts were also destroyed.

The military said Pakistan has consistently sought peace and stability in the region but stressed that the safety and security of its citizens remain the country’s foremost priority.

It said the continued presence of terrorist networks in Afghanistan remains a serious concern for Pakistan and that the latest strikes were directed specifically at identified terrorist hubs.

According to the statement, maximum precautions were taken during the operations to prevent civilian casualties and collateral damage.

The military said Pakistan’s counterterrorism campaign Ghazab lil Haq, being conducted under the broader vision of Azm-e-Istehkam, would continue at full pace.

The campaign is aimed at eliminating what Pakistan describes as foreign-sponsored and supported terrorism from the country.

The latest operations come amid heightened militant violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. On September 20, ISPR separately said eight Khwarij were killed in an exchange of fire in Hangu, while six security personnel, including two officers, were martyred.

Pakistan has repeatedly said that terrorist networks operating from or linked to Afghanistan pose a security threat, while the issue remains part of wider tensions between Islamabad and Kabul.
