Iran Air Says Najaf Flights Will Continue Despite US Sanctions Threat

TEHRAN: Iran’s national airline, Iran Air, has announced that flights to Iraq’s Najaf will continue according to schedule despite the United States’ latest sanctions pressure on Iranian aviation companies.

According to a statement from Iran Air’s public relations department, flights from Tehran, Mashhad and Isfahan to Najaf will continue as previously scheduled.

The announcement comes amid growing US pressure on Iranian airlines and foreign companies providing aviation services to them.

Najaf Route Remains Important

The Najaf route is particularly significant for Iranian travellers and religious pilgrims visiting the holy city, home to the shrine of Imam Ali.

Regular air links between Iran and Iraq are therefore an important part of religious travel between the two countries.

Iran Air has not announced any changes to its Najaf flight schedule despite the latest US measures.

US Threatens Further Sanctions

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned that Iranian airlines could face severe restrictions on international operations from September 23.

Washington has also warned foreign companies providing Iranian carriers with services such as fuel, landing facilities and other aviation support that they could face sanctions.

The measures follow the US Treasury’s September 8 sanctions targeting numerous Iranian aviation-sector entities.

The new restrictions could make it increasingly difficult for Iranian airlines to obtain fuel, airport services, ground handling and other facilities outside Iran.

Despite the growing pressure, Iran Air has so far maintained its scheduled Najaf operations.
