Manipur Relief Camps Expose Continuing Humanitarian Hardships for Displaced Families

Thousands of people displaced by ethnic violence in India’s Manipur state continue to face difficult conditions in government-run relief camps, with shortages of food, drinking water and medical facilities adding to their hardships.

According to Deccan Herald, ground reports from several relief camps have highlighted serious gaps in basic facilities for people who have been displaced by the conflict.

Thousands of displaced people are living in temporary shelters, with some camps accommodating more residents than their available capacity.

The reports have highlighted shortages of food and clean drinking water, while access to adequate healthcare remains limited.

According to the newspaper, around 24,000 people continue to face shortages of basic facilities because of inadequate government arrangements.

The conditions in the camps have raised wider concerns about the humanitarian situation facing families displaced by the Manipur conflict.

International human rights experts have also expressed concern over the conditions in which displaced people are living, saying the relief camps reflect the continuing humanitarian consequences of the prolonged ethnic conflict.

For many displaced families, temporary shelters have therefore remained a source of uncertainty rather than a lasting solution to their problems.
