Mir Raza Case: Judicial Commission Rejects Family’s Request to Summon Senior Police Officers

KARACHI: The Judicial Commission investigating the Mir Raza case has rejected a request from his family to summon senior police officers for personal appearance before the commission.

The commission, headed by Justice Umar Sial, issued a written order regarding its proceedings held on September 24.

According to the written order, the commission recorded statements from Health Secretary Tahir Sanghi, Director General Health Shehryar Memon and SSP Dr Samiullah Soomro during the proceedings.

Mir Raza’s family had requested the personal appearance of the Additional Inspector General, DIG Amir Farooqi and DIG Farukh Lanjar before the commission.

However, the commission noted that it had already informed the family on September 17 that senior police officers would not be summoned for personal appearance.

The commission said the family could submit its questions for the senior police officers in writing.

The questions submitted by the family will then be forwarded to the relevant officers for responses, according to the written order.

The commission said no material had emerged during the proceedings that would justify changing its earlier decision regarding the personal appearance of senior police officers.

It observed that changing its orders without sufficient grounds could undermine public confidence in the commission.

The commission therefore formally rejected the family’s request to summon the senior police officers personally.

The family has been given until September 26 to submit its questions for the officers.

The commission also expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of SSP Dr Samiullah Soomro.

However, it acknowledged and appreciated the SSP’s admission of shortcomings during the proceedings.

According to the written order, the commission noted that Soomro responded to questions appropriately rather than avoiding them.

The Judicial Commission has adjourned its further proceedings until September 28.

The commission will continue examining the evidence and statements related to the Mir Raza case as part of its ongoing proceedings.
