PTI Assigns Two Senior Leaders Role in Backchannel Contacts With Government

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has taken an important decision regarding the role of two senior opposition leaders in connection with its planned Insaf March, according to sources.

Sources said the two leaders have been tasked with assisting PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan in backchannel contacts with the government.

According to the sources, PTI leadership also agreed that the Opposition Leader in the National Assembly and the Opposition Leader in the Senate should remain in Islamabad, taking into account concerns expressed by other party leaders.

PTI Leaders Seek Their Presence in Islamabad

Sources said a number of PTI leaders had urged the party leadership to keep the two opposition leaders in Islamabad because their political approach was considered less confrontational than that of some other PTI leaders.

The sources said the decision was taken while considering the role the two leaders could play in political engagement and contacts with the government.

Some PTI leaders have also expressed reservations about the level of political activity by the two opposition leaders in connection with the party’s campaign.

According to sources, some party members believe that although the two leaders continue to hold important positions in the name of PTI founder Imran Khan and the party, they have not been as active as other leaders expected during the current political mobilisation.

The issue has therefore become part of wider discussions within PTI over the responsibilities of senior leadership ahead of the planned march.
