Araghchi Says Iran Came to New York for Peace, But Ready for War if Attacked

NEW YORK: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said Iran’s high-level delegation came to New York to help create a path toward peace, while stressing that Tehran would stand firm against any aggression even if it led to a devastating war.

In a statement on X after appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press, Araghchi said President Masoud Pezeshkian and he had come to New York to pursue peace rather than promote war.

The statement came after US President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s latest seven-day proposal for a ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

US-Iran Indirect Talks May Resume

According to US media reports, indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran could resume this week, although major differences remain over how the conflict should be brought to an end.

Trump has indicated that he expects further talks with Iran, keeping the possibility of renewed diplomatic contacts open despite his rejection of Tehran’s latest proposal.

Araghchi has maintained that Iran remains prepared to pursue a diplomatic solution but will not accept what Tehran considers unacceptable conditions.

Iran Links Hormuz Reopening to Proposal

Araghchi said on Thursday that Iran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States agreed to the proposal put forward by Tehran.

The strategic waterway remains a central issue in the dispute because of its importance to global energy shipments.

Iran’s position has been that reopening the waterway should be linked to broader arrangements concerning the conflict and US pressure on Tehran.

Tehran Says It Is Ready for Any Outcome

Araghchi’s latest remarks reflect Iran’s dual message of pursuing diplomacy while maintaining its stated readiness to respond to military action.

With Washington and Tehran still divided over the terms of a possible settlement, diplomatic contacts through intermediaries could determine whether the two sides are able to move towards a broader agreement.

For now, Iran says it is seeking a peaceful resolution while remaining prepared for further confrontation if hostilities resume.
